This enterprise came after the realisation that the traditional ways of producing, marketing, as well as selling music behind store counters were quite demanding and costly. Speaking to gospel musician, Thembalami Tagwirei, he lamented how costly and time consuming it was for an artist to produce a single track approximating about USD$3000-$5000 per single track taking into account studio production costs. In this light, if one was to do a full album consisting of say ten songs, the fee would be extremely high. These figures coupled with the costs of branding, marketing, publicity and distribution of the CDs amplify the expenses incurred by the artists. This in turn makes it difficult for the artists to realise profit from their music. Some musicians highlighted that they had to distribute free CDs for more publicity at radio stations and to commuter omnibus drivers, which added to the expenses incurred. This distribution required fuel costs, among other costs.
Based on the plight of musicians mentioned above, ZimHost.com realised the necessity of adopting more economic and lucrative methods of marketing and selling music, hence the advent of the OyOsMusic online music store. The platform is FREE for the artists to upload and have their music sold online and readily accessible and cheap for customers to buy from their comfort zones from any device at any time from anywhere. When musicians produce music, they sign a non-exclusive contract with Zimhost.com prior to submitting their music. The OyOsMusic team develops the musicians brand further through social media packages, website designs, tshirt branding, online marketing and getting airplay on their partner Starfm radio station.
Commenting on the award, Mrs Patricia Saungweme, the Bulawayo Customer Services Manager said “One of the main reasons why OyOsMusic was developed was to change mindsets and reduce piracy because music will readily be available at affordable prices online, people can possibly desist from buying pirated CDs”. She also added “The initiative aims to make artists earn revenue/ royalties of upto 70% paid quarterly and also gives transparent access for artists to keep a track record of their sales”.
Over 4000 tracks have been uploaded so far with Pastor G, Sulumani, Xque, Victor Kunonga, Ngoni Kambarame, Taurai Mandebvu, Good Child having signed on. OyOsMusic have signed up ZARI (Zimbabwe Association of Recording Industries), an organisation that represents nearly all local recording studios. In this light, all the studios under ZARI can have their artist music (Jah Prayzah, Andy Muridzo, Energy Mutodi, Chimbetu, Diana Samkange, Dino Mudondo, Chiwoniso, Biggie Tembo etc) included on the online platform by default because of the affiliation.
