Day three of the ongoing European Union Film Festival in Harare, ended on a powerful note with the screening of multiple award winning Romanian film ‘4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days’. Speaking about the film, the Romanian Ambassador, Dr Silviu Gabriel Barbu said that the Embassy has been in Zimbabwe since 1980 and the screening of this film is a way of registering their presence through giving insight into some of the historical Romanian realities. His deputy Dan Alexandru stated that the film has over 40 International awards and is in the top 15 best movies of the 24th century. He further said that the movie highlights the realities of Eastern Europe before 1989.
The film gives an insightful exploration of the rarely talked yet important issue of abortion. The story explores how the courage and friendship of two Romanian college students is tested when one of them Gabita discovers that she is pregnant by her boyfriend, and seeks an illegal abortion with the help of her classmate Otilia. Enlisting the services of the shady Mr. Bebe, the two girls find themselves in extremely tense and uncomfortable situations and must rely on their mutual support to get them through the ordeal.
The highly educative film leaves the audience with questions about the choices and decisions they make and their repercussions, particularly in relation to unplanned or unwanted pregnancy and abortion. It would be a good initiative to also take this film around different schools, communities and create dialogue around it as a way of education.
