Visually impaired actress Edith Masango on stage at the premiere of Narratives from the Dark |
The one woman show, Narratives from theDark which premiered on the 25th of May at Theatre in the park was well received. The visually impaired actress, Edith Masango put up a refreshing, outstanding, intense and thought provoking solo performance which accorded her a standing ovation from the auditorium full of audience.
Written by Special Matarirano and directed by Eunice Tava, the play offers an autobiography of Edith Masango’s real life experiences. Through the life of the main character Gwen, the play poses a lot of questions about unfairness and segregation towards people living with disabilities. Gwen has to change her mentality as a blind person and treat life as a battle of wills, in order to claim her place within a society that looks negatively at people living with disabilities.
This first ever solo performance to be performed by a visually impaired person in Zimbabwe will go a long way in showing that ‘disability’ does not mean inability.
People who attended the show gave a lot of positive feedback. Among them was the Guest of Honor for the Premiere Mr Elvas Mari from the National Arts Council who said that the performance was refreshing and it will be difficult to surpass it in a long time. Filmmaker, Joe Njagu congratulated the team and commented that the team ‘wrote a new page in Zimbabwean arts history if not the world’. The co-producer of the play, Courage Chinokwetu has revealed plans of touring it around the country and globally, respectively.
